About Dr. Shahriar

Prof. Dr. Shahriar Hossain is an ecologist, journalist, and environmental advocate whose work has long stood at the meeting point of science, society, and public policy. Over several decades, he has devoted his life to understanding how environmental change affects people and ecosystems, particularly in Bangladesh and across the Global South. His work combines academic research, environmental journalism, and civic advocacy, guided by the belief that ecological knowledge must serve the public good.

Born in northern Bangladesh, Shahriar Hossain grew up in a landscape shaped by rivers, farmland, and seasonal cycles. Those early surroundings left a deep impression on him. The rhythms of rural life and the fragile relationship between people and their environment would later influence his intellectual journey and environmental commitments.

His youth coincided with a turbulent period in the country’s history. During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, he became involved in the struggle for independence at a young age. The experience shaped his understanding of justice, resilience, and the responsibility individuals carry toward society. In the years that followed, he remained active in social and democratic movements, advocating for civil rights and freedom of expression during a difficult political era.

Over time, his interests increasingly turned toward environmental questions. Rapid urbanization, pollution, and the growing pressure on natural ecosystems were transforming Bangladesh. Recognizing the urgency of these changes, he pursued higher education in environmental studies and urban ecology. Through years of academic work, he earned multiple graduate degrees and eventually a Ph.D. in Urban Ecology, focusing on the connections between urban development, environmental health, and sustainable policy.

Yet his work never remained confined to academic institutions alone. Shahriar Hossain has always believed that environmental science must move beyond classrooms and research papers. Throughout his career, he has worked to translate scientific knowledge into public awareness and policy action. Journalism became one of his most important tools. Through newspaper articles and public commentary, he has written widely on issues such as plastic pollution, waste management, air pollution, and environmental governance.

He became widely known for his leadership in the campaign against plastic bag pollution in Bangladesh. At a time when plastic waste was choking rivers and drainage systems, he helped bring the issue into national attention through research, advocacy, and public awareness. The movement contributed to the country’s historic decision to ban thin plastic bags, making Bangladesh one of the first countries in the world to adopt such a policy.

His work has been recognized internationally. He received the Environmental Leadership Award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency for his contributions to environmental protection and public awareness. He was also selected as a Fellow of Ashoka, recognizing his innovative role in advancing environmental solutions through civil society leadership.

Alongside advocacy and journalism, Dr. Hossain has contributed to research and teaching through collaborations with universities and research institutions. His academic and policy work explores issues such as waste management, urban environmental sustainability, environmental health, and the role of public participation in environmental governance.

Today, his work continues to bridge different worlds: the field and the classroom, science and journalism, research and policy. Through writing, public engagement, and environmental advocacy, he remains committed to strengthening environmental awareness and promoting practical solutions for a more sustainable future.

At the heart of his work lies a simple conviction: protecting nature is inseparable from protecting human dignity and the well-being of future generations.
